Chesapeake Bay, Virginia

Oceanside…

A note..
a) This area is heavily traveled by Commercial and Military Vessels. Since these Vessels are less maneuverable, your responsibility is to stay clear and safe.

b) This area is also treacherous due to it's vulnerability to the Tide, Current, Wind, and quick Wave build-up from weather conditions. Mariners should take caution.

  1. Starting at the RW "CH" MO ("A") buoy from Offshore, you have two ways to go thru the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (a marvel of engineering). The North opening is convenient to entering Chesapeake Bay, the South side is convenient to Hampton Roads and the ICW.

  2. Taking the South side approach and keeping a good lookout, head (approx) NW to buoy G "1TS" and use the South Auxiliary Channel (just outside the Main Channel, "Thimble Shoal"). Watch for shoaling at buoy G "7".

  3. Go thru the South side opening (watch for the fishing pier to port). You can proceed to Hampton Roads.

  4. If your destination is in the Chesapeake Bay, take the North side opening by heading to the G "3" and R "4" buoys from the RW "CH" MO ("A") buoy. Stay in the channel going more of a NNW direction (approx). Looking and staying away from any Commercial or Military traffic. After G "13" you are thru the North side opening and have more room to run the Chesapeake.

I have been thru this area many times in good and bad weather. Twice I had to stay Offshore till the weather and seas settled down enough to head in safely. Its not all that easy, but of course you get you great days.
I tend to head into Little Creek, a small harbor just a few miles from the Bridge opening. There are plenty of marinas and facilities to be had...Dockage prices are excellent. A Great place after a long journey.

If you continue up the Chesapeake Bay to Hampton Roads, here starts the ICW mile "1" South. The trip will change your life....Enjoy!!
