GUIDE TO GOING UP THE NEW RIVER
    FT. LAUDERDALE , FLORIDA
    USE VHF CHANNEL #9

    1. First bridge from sea entrance Ft. Lauderdale is 17th Street bridge ( opens 1/2hour and hour) 8am to 7pm other wise on demand.

    2. Vessel is proceeding north up ICW at Green marker.21. stay left , there is a triangular piece of water that is very shallow . Keep the seawall and Red #20 pole as your channel.

    3. This channel will merge with the New River, turn left and starts up the river, stay in the channel with NOW green markers on your port and Red on your starboard.

    4. This area is wide and runs up to a tight turn to port and another to Starboard. Be aware of traffic, very large yachts will take up this area, best to stand at first turn and wait for them to clear.

    5. ALWAYS stay on Channel #9 for traffic reports from vessels headed up or down the river. Channel #9 also is what you call all the bridges on.

      a. BEWARE there is a tidal current in the New River up to 3knts , changing every 6hours. It is always best to go up the river with the tide coming out, VERY IMPORTANT

    6. First bridge is THIRD AVE

    7. Second bridge is ANDREWS AVE
NOTE: This is a bridge that opens with one span from the north side. If you are a sailboat then you must stay on the northside depending on size of mast height.

    8. Third bridge is a Railroad Bridgee which has no known closing it is always open unless a train is coming. Then it maybe down for an hour. Best if this happens to tie up on the side of the canal and wait.

    9. Forth bridge is 7th ave.
The river will continue until there is a split in the river, to the right is the North fork and to the left is the South fork, if you are headed to boat yards then you will take the South Fork.

    10. This fork takes a hard turn to port and then goes around Little Florida, (a peninsula) and turns 180 degrees to the right. The river will narrow and this is also the point to be sure that no other vessels of size are in this narrow section before heading further up the river. Check channel #9 always.

    11. Next bridge is DAVIE BLVD once past this bridge the river will open up a little. This is the last bridge before I-95 which is a fixed bridge at 55. vertical clearance. Boat yards such as RiverBend Marina boatyard and Lauderdale Marine Center boatyard are before the bridge. Many more past I-95.
